Some people call them mentors, others call them a Core Team. The purpose of a Core Team is to love teenagers. They primarily do this by building relationships so that when faith and life collide, the teens have a sounding board for figuring out what it all means.
Parishes are always looking for more people to join our family, so if you or anyone you know has a desire to have a direct impact on the lives of high school students, we ask you to pray and consider being a part of a parish Core.
Don't be discouraged - a Core Team consists of adults of all ages from all walks of life. Core members aren't theologians or philosophers, they're just people answering God's call to be present to students in an intentional way.
Here is a sample letter invitation........................................................................
Dear potential core team member,
We are glad that you are interested in serving in our youth ministry! We are always looking for talented ministers to serve in our youth ministry program. We believe that solid ministry is built on relationships between adult staff and teens. Relationships are key to teens feeling loved and accepted so that they can understand the love of God in practical ways. This is when real spiritual growth takes place in a teen’s life.
A Youth Ministry requires a substantial team of volunteers working at all levels – from Core members who lead small groups to Support who setup environments and serve food. The challenge of our Youth Ministry is to access the wealth and diversity of resources within and around the area parishes so as to provide a meaningful and effective faith formation program for younger and older adolescents which engages their energy, imagination, curiosity, compassion and playful spirit in an exploration and engagement of our Catholic faith.
Thus, the quality of our youth ministry volunteers is very important. We are looking for men and women who have made a commitment to Christ and a desire to care for teens. With the aid of prayer and consideration, read the enclosed materials. We encourage you to observe one of our youth ministry events before making your decision to start the process. Because we place a great value on this ministry, we place a great value on our Core.
Once we have your application, one of us will contact you to schedule an appointment. All the information will be kept strictly confidential. In the meantime, please feel free to observe our youth ministry programs.
Youth ministry is a great way to give of your time and serve the Lord. We are looking forward to meeting with you and spending some time talking about your hopes and desires for ministry. If you have any need to reach me, please feel free to call.
All for the glory of God,
Director of Youth Ministry
